Tournament campion Mt. Shasta/Redding Hockey "Team USA" includes coaches Greg Weber and Art Horvath, with players Eric Nihart, Jesse Merkel, Travis Felix, Kyle Felix, Dylan "Pickle" Meyers, Brandon Jones, Casey Curd, Alan Evans, Daniel Ostrowski, Malcom Mattson and goalie Adam Carey.

April 2006:
The Klamath Falls Bantam Ice Hockey Tournament, held the weekend of April 1 and 2, hosted teams from Vancouver WA, Medford OR, and a combined team from Mt. Shasta and Redding competing for the tournament title.

Klamath Falls first contacted hockey enthusiast Art Horvath in Mt. Shasta about entering a team. With only a couple local hockey players in the correct age group, Art contacted Greg Weber with Redding Roller Hockey to collaborate on creating a team with the roller hockey players of Redding, even though the Redding kids had very little ice experience.

"It was great to see all these roller hockey guys out there on rental skates, competing with seasoned ice hockey players." Horvath reported. "We played three teams on Saturday, and one on Sunday.

"Our first game, against a team from Vancouver WA, resulted in a one goal win. The next game with Klamath Falls OR resulted in a much easier win. The third opponent was the Medfore OR team, very tough competition, and tempers flared in the stands and on the ice, with Medfore having one player ejected from the game, and a penalty that kept the player out of the final on Sunday."

The final game of the tournament, filled with highly emotional and intense play, gave the Mt. Shasta/Redding team a 7-2 win and a sweep of the tournament.

Roller hockey activities are being planned this summer at Mt. Shasta's Siskiyou Skating Rink by SIRHOC, the Siskiyou Ice Rink Hockey Club. Games, clinics, and evening skating under the lights are just some of the recreation events that will be available.

February 2006: A Redding business owner and roller hockey enthusiast has donated $500 for youth equipment at the Siskiyou Ice Rink and this Sunday his roller team will play an exhibition on ice against a group of local youth hockey players.

Greg Weber of American Specialty of Redding has been a supporter of the Siskiyou Ice Rink for a long time, according to local hockey volunteer George Rentschler. "It started a couple years ago when Greg purchased pucks for the Rink, and then he volunteered to buy the vests we still use for scrimmages and adult pick-up sessions to tell the teams apart," Rentschler said. "But Greg's greatest gift was a few weeks ago when he stepped up and donated $500 to purchase youth hockey equipment for the Rink."

The money from Weber was used to purchase hockey pants, helmets and other equipment which are used by Siskiyou County youth hockey players. "Here we have Greg, from Redding, donating so that kids in Siskiyou County can enjoy youth hockey," Siskiyou Ice Rink Hockey Club President Paul Wertzberger said. "I think this demonstrates the wide support the Rink has from all parts of Northern California, and shows the potential for our rink to be a truly regional facility."

Weber coaches roller hockey in Redding, and he said he made the donation because he understands how important youth hockey programs can be. "I know the challenges that the coaches in Mount Shasta have getting the youth program going, and making it flourish," Weber said. "I am thrilled to help out and I'm really excited to hear about your successful youth hockey league, and the big numbers of kids who are enjoying hockey."

Weber will bring his roller hockey team to Mount Shasta this Sunday, Feburary 12th, to play an exhibition hockey game with a team of Siskiyou County young people.

"It's all for fun to let the kids from Redding, as well as their parents, come to see our Rink, to enjoy our beautiful environment, and have a fun game with kids from our area," Rentschler said.

The exhibition game starts at 10 a.m. and will result in a change in the schedule at the Rink for this Sunday only.

Here's the schedule for this Sunday: 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.: Adult Pickup Hockey; 10 a.m.: Exhibition Game with Redding and Siskiyou County Youth; 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Youth hockey drills and scrimmages involving Redding and local youth; 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.: Open Public Skate.
