Adult Hockey

Youth Hockey at the Siskiyou Ice Rink

Skating and hockey is a real family affair at the Siskiyou Ice Rink. Youth hockey sessions allow as many local young people as possible to enjoy the sport.

Youth Hockey League, a club sport organized by SIRHOC (the Siskiyou Ice Rink Hockey Club), will organize into teams and play scheduled games beginning Nov 25, 2006 or the next week (depending on rate of signups). To be placed on a team and play in scheduled games, all youths must sign up by Nov 20. This is for all boys and girls ages 6 through 18. The advanced youths 15 and older can also play in the adult league. We hope this year to organize into at least two levels by ages. (The typical age breaks used by USA Hockey are as follows: mites 8 or younger, squirts 9-10, pee wees 11-12, bantams 13-14, midgets 15 and older.)

To sign up, download the youth league form, read it, print it, and the parent or guardian must sign the waiver release form. Send the form and $40 league fee to the address on the bottom of the form, or bring into the practice sessions on Sat, Tues or Thurs.

Youth League will hold games on Saturdays 11a - 1 p, and will hold practices on Tues and Thurs 5:15 - 7pm. Until league is formed, pickup and informal practices are schedule for the Sat, Tues, and Thurs slots.

Youth League is specifically recruiting new youth hockey players in the teenage years. We want to form a bantam-age or older team. This team has opportunity for travel to Klamath Falls and Medford.

To try out for Youth League, no equipment is necessary. We have equipment available in a variety of sizes, including goalie gear. Skate rentals are available too. However, equipment is limited, and is available for these first practices on a first-come basis.

Youth hockey players join in the fun at the Rink, ranging in skill level from beginner to intermediate. The players came from all over Siskiyou County and Redding to learn the exciting sport.

With over 30 young people hitting the ice and playing hockey whenever they can, the Siskiyou Ice Rink Hockey Club (SIRHOC) has announced the formation of a youth hockey league.

IRHOC President Paul Wertzberger said the club is thrilled that a league is possible this year, and a minimum of two teams will be playing. "Most of the players are in the 8 to 12 year old age group," Wertzberger said. "The impetus for the league is from them, they want to play real games."

So far in the history of the Siskiyou Ice Rink, youth hockey has been made up mostly of practices and scrimmages. With the league, at least two teams will be formed and games will be played each Saturday, weather permitting, and the teams will have practice sessions during the week after school at least once each week.

McCloud Mercantile and Scott Valley Bank have jumped on board as sponsors of the two youth teams, so when league starts the young players will be wearing matching socks and jerseys with the name of the sponsors on them. More sponsors may be needed, if the number of players continues to grow, Wertzberger said.

SIRHOC's Kim Mattson explained that the goal of the hockey league is to allow kids of all levels to play hockey. "The teams will be made up of players of different skill levels, however, in hockey we can set up lines of skaters that are of similar skills, and coaches will make sure they play against each other," Mattson said. "Also while we do have a couple of kids who like to play goalie, we think it is best for players to learn all positions, so we plan to rotate kids into the goalie position throughout the league season."

The following equipment is recommended for youth hockey players: a helmet with cage, hockey gloves, shin pads, elbow pads, hockey pants and a youth hockey stick. Shoulder pads are also a good idea. Web sites that sell youth hockey gear include www.hockeygiant.com and www.hockey2.com. Some large sporting goods stores also have roller hockey equipment, which is very similar to ice hockey equipment.

The season at the Ice Rink traditionally begins, weather permitting, in early November, and runs through February. Season passes are not required for participation in Youth League Hockey activities, but are recommended and economical for additional skating and fun during abundant open skate sessions at the Rink. See the Rink Home Page for pass prices.

People who want to purchase passes in advance or as gifts can contact the Siskiyou Ice Rink at the Mount Shasta Recreation District, P.O. Box 314, Mount Shasta, CA 96067, or call 926-2494.
