About the Mt. Shasta Recreation & Parks District
The Mt. Shasta Recreation and Parks District was organized on June 21, 1948 for the purpose of providing diversified, quality recreation programs for individuals of all ages, as well as, providing and adequately maintaining recreation facilities.
The Mt. Shasta Recreation and Parks District is classified as a "Special District" (an independent, local governmental entity). Funding for District operations is partially supported by special taxation, collected and administered through the Siskiyou County treasury. Fees for facility usage and program participation are also charged.
The Recreation and Parks District is governed by a five-member Board of Directors. Boardmembers serve 4-year terms, appointed by the County Board of Supervisors and the Mt. Shasta City Council. Our Current Board: Chairman - Peter Van Susteren, Boardmembers: Chris Marrone, Kim Solga, Sean Doyle, Tom Moore.
The District Administrative Staff consists of: District Administrator - Mike Rodriguez (photo at right); Administrative Secretary -
Cindy Smith; and District Secretary - Julie Shepard. Head of maintenance is John Zanni. The District employs annually 15-25 additional part-time &
seasonal staff: assisting with parks maintenance; serving as recreation facility support staff; coordinating and
supervising numerous youth & adult recreation programs and leisure activities.DID YOU KNOW - The Mt. Shasta Recreation & Parks District contracts to provide administrative, clerical, and maintenance services for the Dunsmuir & Weed Recreation and Parks Districts. This unique service agreement has greatly assisted with the seasonal operation of numerous park facilities & programs in the Dunsmuir and Weed communities.
