Shastice Park
Shastice Park, located off of Rockfellow Drive and adjacent to the Mt. Shasta High School campus, was deeded to the
Recreation and Parks District from the Siskiyou Union High School District in 1978. This 38 acre park is an
increasingly popular recreation facility featuring a lighted softball field, a multi-purpose field complex, three
competition-size tennis courts, several large picnic areas, a large playground and the site of the very popular
Siskiyou Ice Rink - operating Nov.-Feb. Planning is underway for further project development at Shastice including
an off-leash dog park (summer of 2004), enhanced playground area, and proposed future site for the Mt. Shasta
Skatepark and a new swimming pool. Over the years development at Shastice Park has been funded by California Park Bond grants, McConnell
Foundation grants, Ford Family Foundation grants, Quimby Act funds, in addition to generous donations from Mt.
Shasta Rotary, Mt. Shasta Youth Sports organizations, local service clubs and businesses, as well as many donations
from families and individuals.DID YOU KNOW - In August, 1964 the Recreation District's goal to build a swimming pool for the community became a reality with the opening of the Harry L. Benton Memorial Pool. The culmination of many years of vigorous local fundraising, (spearheaded by Dr. Donald Ratley) and a generous donation from Mrs. Harry L. Benton (to her husband's memory) made the construction of the pool on the Mt. Shasta High School property possible. Regretfully, after 38 years of operation the aging pool, in need of major renovation, was "retired" at the end of the 2002 season. The District has included the construction of a new-pool at Shastice Park in its updated Master Plan in anticipation of funding becoming available to make the project possible. |
